Reef Elegy v1.0 is in fixed format, and the auditory display spans the data in linear fashion, from beginning to end. The soundscape moves along the trajectory going from healthy to degraded as time passes. Two variants were produced, using the SuperCollider programming environment. More details on v1.0 can be found here. Please wear headphones!

Abstract

Using sound synthesis to evoke undersea soundscape surrogates

For each cluster, (a) random impulses are generated according to the shrimp density parameter (proportional to the bleach percentage) and (b) the PAR values affect the modulator frequency & index of modulation of an FM unit (with a carrier frequency equal to an integer multiple of f0).

Concrete

Using real undersea recordings of snapping shrimp and algae photosynthesis

For each cluster, (a) the shrimp density parameter (proportional to the bleach percentage) controls the trigger rate of a sample-based granular synthesis UGen, and (b) the PAR values from the coral bleaching data are mapped to the amplitude of another granular synth loaded with algae sound samples.
